About Us

A code cracker is a crossword with the clues removed. Every letter has been replaced by a number, the same number always meaning the same letter, and a handful of letters are given to start you off. From those few anchors you work the rest out.

It is a lovely puzzle and an unforgiving one. Get a letter wrong early and the error propagates silently through the whole grid, which is where most people get stuck and where most people give up.

This site exists to get you past that point, not to do the puzzle for you.

What This Site Does

The site at codecrakerssolver.co.nz provides a solver for number-substitution word puzzles, alongside written guidance on how the puzzle type works and how to get better at it.

You enter the letters you have confirmed and the pattern of a slot you are stuck on, and the tool shows which words fit. The judgment about which of those is right stays with you, which is the part worth keeping.

Around the tool sit explanations: how the numbering convention works, which letters appear most often and why that matters, how to use the given starting letters properly, how to spot a propagated error, and the specific techniques that separate a slow solve from a comfortable one.

How the Tool Works

It Runs in Your Browser

Everything happens on your own device. What you type into the grid is never sent to us, never stored, and never logged. Close the tab and it is gone.

That is not a privacy slogan, it is just how this job should be done. Matching a pattern against a word list needs no server, so involving one would add risk and latency for nothing.

It Matches Patterns, Not Puzzles

The solver has no knowledge of any specific published puzzle. It does not recognise today’s grid, it holds no answer sets, and it cannot tell you what a particular newspaper printed. It takes the letters in front of you and tells you which words fit them.

The Word List Is the Whole Product

A solver is only as good as its vocabulary. Ours covers standard English as used in general publication, and it improves mainly through reader reports. If a word that should have appeared did not, telling us is the single most useful thing you can do for everyone else using the site.

Why This Site Exists

The honest answer is that the existing options were poor.

General word-pattern tools are built for crosswords and anagram games, and they do not understand the one constraint that defines this puzzle: a number always means the same letter, everywhere in the grid. A tool that ignores that cannot tell you when a suggestion is impossible given what you have already entered elsewhere.

The sites that do target this puzzle mostly offer answer sets rather than a solver, which is a different product with a different problem attached to it.

We wanted something that respects how the puzzle actually works, helps at the point where people genuinely stall, and does not require anyone to hand over a copy of a newspaper page.

Getting Better at the Puzzle

A solver is most useful to people who need it least, which is worth saying out loud.

The readers who get the most from this site are the ones who use the tool to get unstuck and then read the technique pages afterwards to understand why they stalled. Letter frequency, common endings, and the habit of confirming a letter in two places before committing to it will cut a solve time more than any tool will.

We publish that material because a reader who improves keeps doing puzzles, and somebody who finishes every grid by typing patterns into a box eventually stops enjoying it.

Our Position on Solvers

Some people think using a solver is cheating. We think that is worth addressing honestly rather than ignoring.

A code cracker has no clues, so there is no external knowledge to look up. The whole puzzle is deduction from letter patterns. A solver does not replace that work, it does the mechanical part of it, which is scanning a vocabulary for matches that fit.

Where we do draw a line: the tool is a thinking aid, not a substitute for the puzzle. We will not complete a grid on request, we do not publish answer sets, and we do not host anyone’s puzzles. If what you want is the finished answers, the newspaper prints them the next day and that is the right place to get them.

What We Are Not

Not Official, Not Affiliated

This site is independent and unofficial. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected to Simon Shuker, any newspaper or publication that prints the puzzle, or any puzzle syndicate.

Puzzle names and publication names appear here descriptively, to identify what our tool and guides are about. Nothing implies association or approval.

We Host No Puzzles

We do not reproduce puzzle grids, scan newspaper pages, or republish anyone’s puzzle content. Those puzzles are created by people who are paid for them and printed by publications that depend on them. Taking them would be both wrong and self-defeating, since the puzzles existing is the reason this site has a purpose.

We Publish No Answer Sets

We do not hold or distribute the official solutions to any published puzzle. We could not supply them if asked.

Not a Dictionary

Our word list exists to match patterns. It is not a reference work, it carries no definitions, and where it differs from a dictionary you should trust the dictionary.

How We Work

We Verify Before Adding

Words reported by readers are checked against standard references before going into the list. A solver that accepts every suggestion stops being trustworthy very quickly.

We Say Where the List Is Thin

Proper nouns, place names, specialist vocabulary, and te reo Māori words are patchier than general English in any list of this kind. We say so rather than letting readers assume a gap is a bug.

We Test the Guidance

Technique pages are written from actually solving puzzles, not from describing the idea of solving them. If a method does not help, it does not get published as though it does.

We Correct in the Open

When a reader shows us something is wrong, we fix it and say so. Corrections are ordinary maintenance here.

What We Publish

Solving Technique

Letter frequency, common digraphs and endings, how to use the given letters, where to start on a cold grid, and how to work outward from a confirmed word.

Error Recovery

How to spot that a letter was assigned wrongly several steps back, and how to unwind it without starting over. This is the single most useful skill in the puzzle and almost nobody writes about it.

How the Puzzle Type Works

The conventions, the variations between publications, and what to expect from different grid sizes.

Using the Solver Well

Entering letters in the order that helps, reading the suggestions critically, and knowing when the tool is telling you that something earlier is wrong.

How This Site Is Funded

Readers are entitled to know where the money comes from.

This site is supported by advertising. Advertising does not shape what our guides say, and no advertiser sees a page before publication or can have one changed afterwards.

We refuse categories that would be straightforward money here: services selling answer sets, scraped puzzle content, and anything requiring a reader’s account credentials. Declined regardless of the offer.

Who Uses This Site

Mostly people doing the puzzle in a newspaper over a cup of tea, who have hit a patch that will not come and would rather get moving again than abandon the grid.

They are not looking for a lecture and they are usually mid-puzzle, which is why the tool sits at the top of the page and the explanations sit below it.

Reader Input

A large share of what this site is came from readers. Word list gaps, confusing wording, techniques we had not thought to write down, and features worth adding have all arrived by email.

If something did not work the way you expected, tell us. On a tool like this, a single clear report usually improves the experience for a great many people at once.

Judging Us

Do not extend trust to a site because it asks for it. Judge it on what you can check.

The solver runs in your browser, which you can verify by disconnecting from the internet and watching it keep working. We publish an address, a phone number, and a working email. We state what we are not affiliated with. We host no puzzles and publish no answer sets, which is visible by looking. We say plainly that we will not complete a grid for anyone, which is not what a site chasing traffic would say.

Those claims are checkable. If we stop meeting them, the contact address is on every page.
